6 creative pancake recipe ideas to try this Shrove Tuesday

Though it was originally an Anglo-Saxon Christian tradition, Shrove Tuesday (or ‘Pancake Day’, as it’s more commonly referred to) is now celebrated by lots of different people around the world.

Shrove Tuesday marks the last day before the beginning of the festival of Lent, and it takes place exactly 47 days before Easter Sunday – so the date changes from year to year. But this year, it falls on the 1st of March.

In Christian tradition, it’s said that at this time, Jesus retreated into the desert where he fasted for 40 days and 40 nights – eating no food and drinking no water, even though he was tempted by Satan.

As a result, Christians would give up a wide range of different foods such as meat, eggs, fats, and dairy during this time to replicate the discipline and self-restraint Jesus demonstrated in the wilderness. This meant that Shrove Tuesday would be the last day people would have to use up all these kinds of ingredients. And one of the easiest ways to do this was to make pancakes.

These days, many Christians still observe Lent, although Shrove Tuesday has become a day where people of all religions and nationalities enjoy a tasty treat. And, unlike some of the bigger holidays like Christmas and Halloween, it’s pretty easy to get involved – all you have to do is whip up a couple of pancakes.

Here in the UK, pancakes are typically served with lemon juice and sugar or a healthy dose of golden syrup, and they’re cooked very thinly. But if you fancy something a little different this Shrove Tuesday, there are plenty of interesting pancake recipes and ideas out there.

So whether you celebrate Pancake Day every year and are looking to mix things up, or you’re new to making pancakes, here are six pancake ideas that are sure to make you flip out…
